The Discovery Science Center has partnered with Waste Free OC to teach waste reduction to kids in Orange County’s schools.
Discovery Science Center is now hosting assemblies that focus on waste reduction, reuse and recycling for 6th grade students.The staff follows a lesson plan that aligns with California Science Content standards and engages students with a keypad wireless response system. Students take home educational booklets with games and activities, and a poster that shows them what can and can’t be recycled.
More than 2,000 6th grade students participated in the program during the 2008/2009 school year. This year, we’re hoping for 3,000.

The Orange County Board of Supervisors recently approved interactive exhibits at the Discovery Science Center. The waste reduction exhibits will allow visitors to sharpen their everyday knowledge about important waste reduction attitudes and behaviors, and show them how to change their own behavior to help reduce the amount of waste that goes to the County’s landfills.
A total of $1,715,739 was given to Orange County cities and municipal solid waste special districts to develop and implement regional recycling programs. As recipients of Orange County grants, each city is reducing waste that would end up in local landfills.
